The Great Leader Series No. 26 - Kano

This month I tried to think of a modern leader but what denotes “modern”?
Are we looking at people like Richard Branson or Lord Sugar? They are thought of as current leaders but they are too old to be classed as modern leaders by the young of the day.
Can you only be a leader when you’re old and grizzled?
Who is it that gives the young and upcoming their values? Some cynics look at people like Amy Winehouse, Pete Docherty or Wyley and see them as the people that parents need to be wary of. [I count myself amongst those].
So what does a young leader do? And how old do they have to be?
In previous articles I have chosen some people who were good leaders during only part of their lives: when circumstances dictated what they had to do.
So let’s turn the question on its head. How young can a leader be? My answer to that, is any age and the young leader I have chosen for this month is Kano. Who do I hear you ask?
Kane Brett Robinson, from East Ham, was born 21 May 1985 and is an English rapper. His grandparents came to England from Jamaica as immigrants.
During his time at Langdon Comprehensive School in East Ham he was a good and keen footballer representing Chelsea FC, Junior Hammers and Norwich City by the time he was 13. He also gained nine GCSEs and obtained a place at Greenwich University, but he chose a musical career.
He is said to be extremely good looking. The phrase I read was “he could melt knicker elastic at a thousand paces”!!! but his music remains the most important thing in his life. There is plenty of time for a girlfriend later on.
Kano first became known on the UK grime scene [ www.mistermix.co.uk for more information] with his first group N.A.S.T.Y. Crew [ Natural Artistic Sounds Touching You], an East London based Grime crew. Using this as spring board he was signed as a solo artist and began working on his solo album, which he released in 2005.
During the next few years he explored his music, finding success with his ideas and developing new thoughts. He has won a number of important awards and is forging ahead with his career.
A career in music is never easy; there are always numerous people who think they are the best thing since sliced bread, which of course they maybe.
The reason I chose Kano this month is his fervour and dedication to his music. The music may not appeal to me but it does appeal to many disillusioned young people who inhabit a very different world to us but need hope.
Through his success Kano is showing people that they can achieve with perseverance and dedication. He has not dropped out; he has, and continues to make good music. He moves forward, achieving great heights in a world that these young people understand. He reveals a passion that excludes trivia and other distractions. He has decided what is most important to him. Some young people are conscious of these goals and follow suit. Many more will follow.
